Our earth revolves around the Sun. Physics says the bigger
the object the greater the force of gravity is has to pull things towards it.
Physics also says objects that are in motion want to travel in one direction.
This is called inertia. Our earth is surrounded by other stars and planets that
are bigger than our planet. For instance Jupiter is over a hundred times bigger
than earth. These other planets in our solar system can slowly pull our earth
towards them through the power of gravity and inertia….IF it wasn't for the Sun
our earth would be pulled into other planets and be destroyed. The Sun's
gravity keeps the earth revolving around the Sun rather than spinning off
through inertia into outer space. (Take a rock and tie it to a one foot piece
of string and spin it in a circle. The rock is earth, the string is gravity and
your hand is the Sun.)
Explain that in the Christian life we are called to live in
orbit around the Son of God. Our life is forever attracted to him. His love,
his goodness and his wisdom act as gravity keeping us close to Him and
revolving around Him. BUT in this world there is also other forces which seek
to pull us towards them and they seek to bring inertia into our lives and cause
us to spin away from the Lord into another direction that causes distance
between us and God. The greater the distance an object has from a source of
gravity, the more the power of inertia will cause it to move further and
further away until it gets to another planet's gravity pulls it into orbit.
In life there are sources of temptation that we must be
careful to keep our distance from them. The closer we get to them the more
their gravity will pull us into them and the more distance we will travel away
from the SON (Sun).
